Note this is an in and out run so you will have participants coming towards you at times. Please give way to inbound (faster) racers. \nExpert – TBC \nAll runs will finish back at the start point where you will transition to your bike. \nBiking Sections\nThe race takes place on open roads. Markings and marshals are there to help you and to manage traffic safety\, but you must take responsibility for your own safety and must obey the rules of the road at all times. \nRoad surfaces are typically tarmac covered country/back roads and generally will be normal to poor surface\, sometimes VERY poor (It’s an Adventure Race not a Tri!). Any markings stating that there is bad surface ahead can be taken literally. Note any descents marked as dangerous must be cycled in single file with no overtaking allowed. \nPlease rack your bike as tightly as possible and attach your helmet to your bike whilst it is in transition. Bikes will be moved by marshals if not racked properly. \nYou will be instructed to mount and dismount at certain points and you must obey these instructions. Anyone failing to do so may be disqualified and/or asked to abandon the race by the Race Director. \nSport & Expert : Coomb Hill\, known locally as “The Wall”\, is a narrow steep climb where many will need to dismount. As instructed by marshals\, please walk on left and pass on right only. \nYou will not be allowed to mount your bike unless you are wearing a helmet. For safety reasons Aero/Tri Handlebars are not permitted. \nPuncture resistant tyres are strongly recommended for the Sport and Expert courses. \nThe end of the bike leg has a 120 degree very sharp bend off the main road back to the club entrance. Please pay extra attention at this turn when instructed. \nKayak Sections\nParticipants in Expert and Sport will be required to kayak a 1.5 km course on Lough Hyne\, on event-organizer-provided sit-on-top double kayaks. \nParticipants will be provided with a buoyancy aid\, which is compulsory to wear at all times on the water. \nIf you arrive to the kayak area and a kayak is available you must take the next one up. In a case where no kayak is available you will be asked by the Timing Marshal to time out while you await a free kayak. Time outs can only be taken if directed by the Timing Marshal. Kayak course may be shortened (due to weather conditions etc) if deemed necessary by the Race Director before or during the event. \nA full safety team will be on the water and you must accept any instructions given to you by this team without dispute. \nFinally\nParticipants undertake SCAR Skibbereen Adventure Race at their own risk. The event is covered by public liability insurance but should you require personal insurance you should make your own arrangements. \nPlease familiarise yourself with the route maps. \nPlease observe warning signs and any race marshal’s advice. \nYou are privileged to be allowed to race in several of these iconic facilities normally reserved for casual recreation\, so please respect the environment. \nAnyone found littering in any section of the course will be immediately disqualified. Feel free to report others littering to our marshals. \nRemember every one of the 100+ marshals you meet during the race is giving their time freely to volunteer to make your race better. \nPlease respect them and give them a small thank you as you pass them. \nWithout them you wouldn’t be racing! \n  \nThanks for all your support. Have a great race. Enjoy! \nFor Full List of FAQ’s\, click here…

A good level of fitness it required and completion will be the name of the game for many\, especially if it is wet. Your Coalface T-shirt will hang with pride. \nBreakdown of 56km Sport Course: \nStage 1 – Trail/Forest Run 5km\nStage 2 – Cycle 20km (New Route)\nStage 3 – Forest/Quarry/Trail 7km.\nStage 4 – Cycle 25km (Reverse of 2017 Route)\nNOTE: There will be a 500m run from Bike to the Finish Line in the woods \n\n\nCHALLENGE COURSE\n\n\n30KM TOTAL DISTANCE  \n\n\nFor those who love the outdoors and have always wanted to test themselves against the natural terrain then this is your opportunity! Our goal is to build on the last four years to make SCAR’17 an even bigger success. \nSCAR ’17 will be an even bigger and better event with courses available to suit\, beginners\, intermediate and expert adventure racers. Each course will be fully timed with splits and will all finish in the grounds of the stunning Liss Ard Estate on the outskirts of Skibbereen town. \nWhichever course you choose you will be guaranteed to spend a couple of hours running\, biking\, or kayaking in some of Irelands most scenic environs and this year will see Europe’s largest saltwater lake\, and Ireland’s first marine reserve\, Lough Hyne\, being used for the kayaking section. This will be a truly unique opportunity for the competitors as they get to challenge themselves in this conservation paradise. \nThe courses will also take you out of Skibbereen and through surrounding villages\, such as Union Hall\, Castletownshend\, and Baltimore as well as tens of kilometers along coastal roads with stunning sea views as far as the famous Fastnet Rock. \nIf you really want to challenge yourself in the glorious surrounds of West Cork and help charities by knowing that 100% of your race entry fee is being donated to worthy causes then sign up today to take part in SCAR ’17 and let West Cork leave its mark on you next October. \nYours in Racing\, \nThe SCAR  Team

SUMMARY:The COALFACE
DESCRIPTION:This is a single day adventure duathlon race. Based in a former coal mine you will be running and cycling up to four sections\, combining running trail\, forest track\, hills and an abandoned open cast mine. The cycle sections are on sealed tarmac roads of varying quality\, from primary roads to quiet country lanes. With a choice of three different courses there is one for you to pit yourself against. \nThe 78km Elite and the 56km Sport will incorporate some of the longest drags and the fastest descents in the County. We are fortunate to have the picturesque Discovery Park as the central transition point for each section of the race. In this way you will always loop back to facilities and supporters who will get to spur you on throughout the race without them having to leave the comfort of the Park.
