SUMMARY:Wicklow Mountains Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge\nAre you ready to test your fitness by running through the rocky terrain and hills of the Wicklow Mountains? You’ve come to the right place! Sign up for the Wicklow Mountains Challenge and prove to yourself you can do it while also raising much needed funds for people living with EB. \nThe Routes\nThe event comprises of a half marathon or a 10km with participants enjoying some of Ireland’s most stunning scenery as they run through mountains\, bogs and rivers. Starting high on the Wicklow Gap you will run into Glendalough Valley passing old mining works along the route. A short climb onto the Brockagh Mountain with a fantastic view of the Glendalough Valley and then onto the finish line. \nThe Cause\nBy taking part in the DEBRA Ireland Wicklow Mountains Challenge\, not only are you taking on a tough mountain race\, you are also part of a team of 800 runners who are raising money for families living with EB. EB is rare\, which means it gets very little government funding so your support is vital. Every participant is helping to change the lives of EB families. \n  \n Half Marathon\nFrom the starting line a nice warm up climb brings us on to a descent to where we pick up the Saint Kevin’s Way. This is the start of a long climb along forest footpaths to the highest point of the route: the Wicklow Gap. From here we follow old mining tracks and a short section of road to reach the valley floor at Glendalough. This gives us some respite before the famous sting in the tail as we tackle the tough climb through the forests on Brockagh Mountain. A gentle trail then leads us to the finish line. \nElevation:\n21km: 600m climb \n\nDistance: 21km.\nRegistration time: 9.00am – 10.00am. Coach pick up from Brockagh Centre to starting point at 10.00am. (Race starts at 10.30am).\nRegistration Point: Brockagh Resource Centre – Glendalough (Bus from here to start of route – included in registration).\nFinish Point: Brockagh Resource Centre.\nRegistration cost: €80.\nFundraising: This is a charity event and funds raised ensure that our patient support services can continue for all our EB families. DEBRA Ireland is a lifeline for all those living with EB – so any additional funds you can raise will make a huge difference to their lives.\nIncluded in registration: Bus transfer from registration point at Brockagh Centre to race start\, race medal\, chip timing\, all usual race support along the route\, refreshments and post race tea and coffee.\n\nEntry/Registration Link\n  \n11km\nA tough route this for the 11km option. A short gentle climb leads to a harder climb to the summit of Trooperstown Mountain. The effort will be rewarded with a beautiful vista off the Wicklow Mountains. A steep descent bring you down into Trooperstown Forest and across the Avonmore River from where the next\, but easier\, climb starts. This climb brings us onto Paddock Hill before picking up the Wicklow Way and finishing at Brockagh Forest. \nThe route will be on very mixed ground\, some forest track\, some road and a lot of small rough mountain trails. It will be marked by finger boards\, flags and existing signs. \nElevation:\n11km: 540m climb \n\nDistance: 11km.\nRegistration time: 10.30am – 11.30am.\nRegistration Point: Laragh GAA Club.\nStart Time: 11.30am. (Starting point also Laragh GAA Club)\nFinish Point: Brockagh Resource Centre.\nRegistration cost: €80.\nFundraising: This is a charity event and funds raised ensure that our patient support services can continue for all our EB families. DEBRA Ireland is a lifeline for all those living with EB – so any additional funds you can raise will make a huge difference to their lives.\nIncluded in registration:  All usual race support along the route\, race medal\, chip timing\, refreshments and post race tea and coffee.\n\nEntry/Registration Link\nFAQ’s\nCan I buy an entry for a friend?\n\nOnly one entry per person please.  Race number will be assigned and posted to details provided on registration. Please ensure your correct details are given as any lost / incorrectly assigned race numbers will incur a €5 fee. \nWhy no deposit option this year?\n\nIn previous years 33% of people who only paid the deposit did not turn up on the day.  That means the deposit only covered our costs of running the event (chip timer\, mountain guides\, bus transfers\, insurance and refreshments all have to be paid by us regardless of numbers). As this is a charity event\, we can’t risk losing 33% of our income due to no shows. \nHow do I get my number and chip?\n\nYour number and timing chip will be posted out to you in advance of race day. \nWhat does my registration fee include?\n\n– the race\, including all the usual race support along the route.\n– chip timing.\n– bus transfer from Brockagh Centre to race start (Half Marathon).\n– water stations along the route.\n– medical personnel at finish line.\n– race medal.\n– post race refreshments.\n– the satisfaction of finishing a tough mountain challenge.\n– the knowledge that you have raised much needed funds for patients with EB. \nIs it possible to get a refund of the entry fee?\n\nUnfortunately\, we cannot refund your entry fee.  We have to cover the costs of running the event (chip timer\, mountain guides\, bus transfers\, insurance and refreshments all have to be paid by us regardless of numbers participating). As this is a charity event\, we also rely on the event to fund our patients support services. \nCan I swap race distances?\n\nYes\, but we can’t guarantee you will get a spot on your preferred distance. If spots are available you can switch distances up to Friday 20th January 2017.  Please email us at wicklowchallenge@debraireland.org to see if we can accommodate your request. \nCan I transfer my entry to a friend?\n\nYes\, you can as long as you notify us before Friday 20th January 2017.  Please email us wicklowchallenge@debraireland.org to let us know so we can transfer your entry to them. We will need all their details as race number will be assigned and posted to details provided on registration. \nCan I defer my entry until next year?\n\nYes\, you can as long as you notify us before Friday 20th January 2017.  Please email us at wicklowchallenge@debraireland.org to let us know so we can transfer your entry to 2018. If you can’t run in 2018 you will forfeit your place and entry fee. There is a charge of €5 for this. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat time do the races start?\n\nHalf Marathon registration\nOpen from 9.00 – 10.00am. Race starts at 10.30am (Coach pick up from Brockagh Centre to starting point at 10.00am). \n11km registration\nOpen 10.30 – 11.30 am at Laragh GAA Club. Race starts at 11.30am (start line is also at Laragh GAA Club). \nNOTE: races have different starting points (see above) but both finish just behind Brockagh Centre. \nWhat do I need to bring with me?\n\nFirst and foremost\, don’t forget your race number – your timing chip is attached to it. If you lose your race number before the race there will be a fee of €5 for a new one.  \nYou should bring some pre-race clothes as you will be at the registration area for at least one hour before the race start. Please make sure to bring a water bottle with you as there will be tap refills only at the registration. \nWhat kind of gear should I wear?\n\nYou must have a windproof jacket with you on the route.\nWe strongly advise against wearing headphones on the route.\nWe recommend trail runners seeing as parts of the race are off track and can be muddy. \nWhere can I leave my gear?\n\n11km – We advise you to leave your belongings in your car – car park is situated right next to start line in Laragh GAA Club. SUMMARY:Gaelforce - Mountain Run
DESCRIPTION:CONQUER THE WILDS OF CONNEMARA\nUNIQUE ACCESS TO UNMARKED MOUNTAINS WITH 3 DISTANCES \nSpecial access has been granted to this stunning route by local landowners making it an amazing opportunity for mountain running \n1. 22KM EXPERT MOUNTAIN RUN \n2. 12KM INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN RUN \nChallenging terrain throughout with steep ascents and descents. Before entering either of these two races we recommend you read our Entry Requirements. \n3. 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN/TRAIL RUN \nFor those who are new to mountain running and are looking for an introductory event. You will need a reasonable level of fitness. \nTHE COURSE\nTHE 22KM EXPERT MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nSTAGE 1:\nThe route starts from Killary Adventure Centre and heads across the bog until it joins the Western Way walking trail. This brings you onto a forestry road and on to your first ascent of the route. You will stay close to a marked fence as you ascend. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324 metres and you will keep the fence within 10m of you as you climb up the hill. Once you reach the top there is a slow\, gentle descent along the soft ground at the top. You will continue along to a left turn at the end of the valley – a distance of approximately 2 km from the top of the hill. \nSTAGE 3:\nThe route descends for the first part before climbing from approximately 800 feet up to 1800 feet.  This is a steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. Next you will continue along to spot height 556 metres.\nThis section of the run is quite boggy and visibility up here can change quite quickly.  Performing a U turn you will head out along the edge of the valley before going downhill into Leenane.  This is a good descent if you are happy on bog and slippy ground\, if not take your time! \nSTAGE 4:\nReaching the back of Leenane you will come out into a private road and then follow this down to the main road.  You will encounter a dangerous corner so be aware of traffic. This road section will be about 600m and before joining the rough Western Way track. Continue along this until you reach the arrow pointing you up your last hill. \nSTAGE 5:\nThe last hill will be marked again with bamboos holding ribbons which you must stay within 10m of as this is the safest route. You continue to the summit cairn.\nFor your descent is quite tricky underfoot so please be aware of conditions and your skill level in descending.  You are aiming for the Western Way again and the path from earlier returning you to Killary Adventure Centre and the finish line. 22km and 4500ft of ascent done and dusted. \n**Please make sure you are aware of the Mandatory Kit List which is extremely important for all distances of the Mountain Run. \nTHE 12KM INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nSTAGE 1:\nThe route starts from the back of Killary Adventure Centre and heads across the bog until it joins the Western Way walking trail. This brings you into forestry. You continue along a slightly overgrown road to the bottom of the mountain. Starting up the hill you will follow the fence which is marked with red ribbons. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324m and you will keep the fence within 10m of you. Once you reach the top there is a nice gentle descent across the soft ground at the top.\nYou will continue along to a left turn at the end of valley – approximately 2 km from the top of the hill. \nSTAGE 3:\nThe route descends for the first part before climbing from approximately 800 feet up to 1800 feet.  This is a steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. At the end of the climb you will continue to follow fencing out and around the top end of the horseshoe. Be aware that it is quite boggy here in sections but you need to maintain sight of the fence. \nSTAGE 4:\nClimbing to the last spot height at 550 feet\, it is all downhill from there.  The descent is along the fence line and with the 22km race rejoining your route there will be people coming past. Take care on descent as it is grass and bog. You will rejoin the Western Way back to Killary Adventure Centre. \nTHE 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nThe course follows the same route as Stage 1 of the 12km Intermediate Mountain Run. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324m and you will keep the fence to your left and within 10m. Once you reach the top there is a nice gentle descent across the soft ground at the top. \nHere is where you leave the other runners behind as you head down hill.  This ground is usually quite soft with slippery conditions underfoot.  As you get closer to the bottom you will start to follow a river. \nYou are now on the homeward stretch having reached the forest road. You continue along to the river crossing\, where depending on the amount of water you might have to use the bridge. Once past here you take a bog road to meet the tarmaced road before running a further 500m on main road to finish in Killary Adventure Centre. \nPRICING & INFO\n\n\n\nENTRY IS ONLINE ONLY AND IS NOW OPEN\n22km Expert & 12km Intermediate Events: €40.00pp (places limited) \n12km Introductory Event: €30.00pp \nAll prices shown exclude €4.50 booking fee \nOn-the-day entry if places available: \n22km Expert & 12km Intermediate Events: €50.00pp \n12km Introductory Event: €40.00pp \nPLEASE NOTE\nOnline registration closes at 15:00 on Friday 3 March 2017\, or when all places sold out. \nYou must be an experienced mountain runner to enter the 22km Expert or 12km Intermediate Events – please read the entry requirements before you decide to enter the Gaelforce Mountain Run. \nYou must be over 18 years of age on the day of the race to enter. \nENTRY FEE INCLUDES\n\nEvent technical T-shirt\nA fully marked route\nFull safety cover\nOne-off access to this stunning route\nUse of electronic timing devises\nPost-event food from John West!\n\nPlease note t-shirts are ordered 4 weeks in advance of the race.
