DESCRIPTION:WAAR – Wild Atlantic Adventure Race is the brainchild of CLG Naomh Muire and is for both the seasoned and experienced participant. With the aim of the event being; we should all get involved in some physical activity which encourages more positive mental health. \nWAAR offers Three different categories;\n– Individual WAAR Route\, 55.5k \n– Team (4 person or 2 person)\, 56.5k \n– Sprint\, 39k  \nWAAR INDIVIDUAL (55.5KM)\nIndividual\nAll individuals must complete all four disciplines. Run\, Bike\, Hike\, Kayak (55.5k approx) \nRUN : 10K \nThe run route will be the same as 2017 making up a 10km route. \nLeaving Naomh Muire GAA club heading through Mullaghdubh on the main road before turning left onto airport road\, continue approx 1km to the airport. \nThe run section will enter the airport grounds and onto the airport runway (Provided there are no delays with the flight) making WAAR the only adventure race in the country to run on a live runway. \nLeaving the airport grounds the run will cross Carrickfinn beach to the Ballymanus road after catching your first glimpse of the Wild Atlantic.\nRunners will continue along the road for approx. 1k before turning onto the cross country route around Ballymanus monument and onto Mullaghdearg beach. Leaving the beach with a short\, steep run on a sand dune runners will follow the course back to the Clubhouse. \nThe run section is made up of approx 6km road and 4km cross country/beach. \nNote: All off road sections cross private property which we have been kindly given permission to use on the day. There is no access to this land in the lead up to the event and all competitors are asked to respect this and train elsewhere for the race. \nBIKE : 42.5K \nCompetitors will arrive back from the run and mount their bikes at the clubhouse grounds at transition area 1 (T1). Leaving T1 the bike route leaves Mullaghdearg heading left along the Wild Atlantic Way towards Kincasslagh. The route will continue along the main road past Keadue\, Burtonport and towards Dungloe\, approx 16km. \nArriving at ‘Top Petrol Station’ competitors turn right heading another 16km approx towards Meenaweal chapel through Meenamara and with a steep cycle up Tór. \nContinuing on to Meenawheel\, cyclists will arrive at T2 to begin the hike section. \nNote: All competitors must slow down coming into T2 and dismount their bikes. Marshals are there for your safety and failure to dismount bike before entering the transition area will result in a time penalty. \nHIKE : 2K \nRacking your bike at T2\, competitors will begin their hike up An Croghan Mór\, 1k each way with a time keeper at the top (so no turning back half way) The route is marked by white pegs in the ground with red flags and there will be marshals on the route should a competitor need assistance. \nBIKE : 42.5K … continued from above\nBack on your bike after the Hike\, for the final 11km approx. Competitors will take a sharp left after Meenawheel chapel heading towards Loughanure. \nIn the village of Loughanure turn right down the Glen Road towards Annagry and turning left at Annagry following the road back to Naomh Muire clubhouse to transition area 3. \nFinish \nAfter the kayak competitors will run along the football pitch to the finish line. \n \nWAAR TEAMS (56.5KM)\nTeams (4) \nThe WAAR TEAM route will comprise of four categories; \nRUN\, BIKE\, HIKE & KAYAK \nWhich will cover the same route as the main WAAR event. \nThere are two options when entering the Team; \n(1) Team of four: where each person undertakes one discipline or \n(2) Team of two: where person one does RUN and KAYAK and person two does CYCLE and HIKE \nRUN : 10K \nThe run route will be the same as last year\, making up a 10km route. \nLeaving Naomh Muire GAA club heading through Mullaghdubh on the main road before turning left onto airport road\, continue approx 1km to the airport. The run section will enter the airport grounds and onto the airport runway\, (watch out for the morning flight) making WAAR the only adventure race in the country to run on a live runway. \nOnce you have exited the airport grounds the run will continue as per previous years crossing Carrickfinn beach to the Ballymanus road after catching your first glimpse of the Wild Atlantic. \nRunners will continue along the road for approx. 1k before turning onto the cross country route around Ballymanus monument and onto Mullaghdearg beach. (Now is the perfect chance to capture some of the stunning views) Leaving the beach with a short\, steep run on a sand dune following the course back to the Clubhouse. \nThe run section is made up of approx 6km road and 4km cross country/beach. \nNote: All off road sections cross private property which we have been kindly given permission to use on the day. There is no access to this land in the lead up to the event and all competitors are asked to respect this and train elsewhere for the race \nBIKE : 42.5K \nCompetitors will arrive back from the run and pass the timer to the cyclist who will mount their bikes at the clubhouse grounds at transition area 1 (T1). Leaving T1 the bike route leaves Mullaghdearg heading left along the Wild Atlantic Way towards Kincasslagh. The route will continue along the main road past Keadue\, Burtonport and towards Dungloe\, approx 16km. \nArriving at ‘Top Petrol Station’ competitors turn right passing the community hospital and taking a left at the small round-about heading another 16km approx towards Meenaweal chapel through Meenamara and with a steep cycle up Thor. \nAt Meenawheel Chapel all competitors will enter transition area 2. All competitors will be asked to slow down coming into T2 and dismount their bikes. \nPlease note the marshals are there for your safety and failure to slow down or dismount bike before entering the transition area will result in a time penalty. \nHIKE : 2K \nRacking your bike at T2 the bike competitor will pass the timer to the hiker who\, will begin their hike up An Croghan Mór\, 1k each way with a time keeper at the top (so no turning back half way) The route is marked by white pegs in the ground with red flags and there will be marshals on the route should a competitor need assistance \nBIKE : 42.5K … continued \nAfter the Hike the timer will once again be handed to the cyclist who will remount their bike for the final 11km approx. \nCompetitors will take a sharp left after Meenawheel chapel heading towards Loughanure. In the village of Loughanure turn right down the Glen Road towards Annagry and turning left at Annagry following the road back to Naomh Muire clubhouse to transition area 3. \nKAYAK : 2K \nBack at the clubhouse competitors re-rack their bikes before passing the timer to their team mate\, heading the short distance to Mullaghdearg lake adjacent to the football pitch. Once at the lake all competitors will be given a buoyancy aid which must be worn. \nThe 2k kayak route will be clearly marked along the lake. (please be aware that all other competitors will be completing a 1K route so their route will also be marked) \nFinish \nAfter the kayak all team members can run along the football pitch to the finish line together. There will be a holding area for all teams to wait for their kayak competitor. It is your teams responsibility to organise logistics and to have all competitors at the holding area on time. \n \nWAAR Sprint (39KM)\nSprint \nThe WAAR Sprint route will comprise of three categories; RUN\, CYCLE & KAYAK\, which will cover parts of the main WAAR route. \nRUN : 5K \nThe run route will leave Naomh Muire GAA club heading across the road toward Mullaghdearg beach\, the route will comprise of a mixture of road\, cross country and beach in a loop that leads back to the clubhouse. \nBIKE : 33K \nCompetitors will arrive back from the run and mount their bikes at the clubhouse grounds at transition area 1 (T1). Leaving T1 the bike route leaves Mullaghdearg heading left along the Wild Atlantic Way towards Kincasslagh. The route will continue along the main road past Keadue\, Burtonport and into Dungloe. The route leaves Dungloe heading towards Loughanure on the N56. \nOnce in Loughanure competitors will turn left down the Glen road towards Annagry\, turning left at Annagry competitors will follow the road back to Naomh Muire clubhouse to transition area 3. \nKAYAK : 1K \nBack at the clubhouse competitors re-rack their bikes at T3 before heading the short distance to Mullaghdearg lake adjacent to the football pitch. Once at the lake all competitors will be given a buoyancy aid which must be worn. The 1k kayak route will be clearly marked along the lake. \nFINISH \nAfter the kayak competitors will run along the football pitch to the finish line. \n \nWAAR Beag (26.5KM)\n\nRUN 3.7k  \n\nLeaving Naomh Muire GAA club heading towrds Mullaghdubh\, leaving the main road turning left onto Ballymanus road. Runners will continue along the road for approx. 200m before turning onto the cross country route around Ballymanus monument and onto Mullaghdearg beach. Leaving the beach with a short\, steep run on a sand dune runners will follow the course back to the Clubhouse.\n\nThe run section is made up of approx 1km road and 3km cross country/beach. Note: All off road sections cross private property which we have been kindly given permission to use on the day. There is no access to this land in the lead up to the event and all competitors are asked to respect this and train elsewhere for the race. \n\n\nBIKE : 22.5k\nCompetitors will arrive back from the run and collect their bikes at the clubhouse grounds at transition area 1 (T1). Leaving T1 the bike route leaves Mullaghdearg heading left along the Wild Atlantic Way through Kincasslagh. \n\nCompetitors will turn left at Meenbanad towards Kerrytown and join the Sprint Route on the Dungloe/Loughanure Road. Turning left in Loughanure onto Glen Road and back to clubhouse.\n\nFinish\nAfter mounting your bike at T3 competitors will run along the football pitch to the finish line.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n*distance may change on the day due to circumstances outside of our control.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTimekeepers  \n\n\n\nYour timer will be given out at registration on Friday evening\, the timing chip is located inside your race number and it is each competitors responsibility to keep their timer on them. Mt Brandon Run/Hike\, this is a super 15.5km loop around Irelands second highest mountain range. 5km Hike will get you to the summit of Mt Brandon before a super ridge to get you on the Dingle way walking trail. Explore the Wild Atlantic Way and the Bluestack Mountains by foot and by bike. Enjoy a day out in the wilds of Donegal\, whether you are a competitive athlete or a newcomer to the outdoor adventure scene. \nChoose from three route options; The Full Monte\, The Half Monte and The Little Monte. Races start from the Community Centre\, Mountcharles from 8am on Saturday 30th August 2024. You can enter as an individual or share the journey as a team! \nThe Little Monte\nAll routes are subject to change and you will be notified in advance or on the day. \nRun/Walk | 5.2km | 85 Elevation \nRoute Overview: Be part of the action and enjoy a 5km walk/run loop\, littles ones are welcome\, under supervision. You’ll start at the Mountcharles Community Centre\, go downhill past the Chapel\, turning right\, watch out for a very steep descent past the Hall Demesne wall. Enjoy the views of Donegal Bay as you turn right onto the shore road and make your way from the little pier\, on past the big pier and get ready for the uphill past Salthill Gardens. Loop back right to Mountcharles and finish at the Community Centre\, to soak up the race day atmosphere. \nTerrain: Tarmac side road. \n \nThe Half Monte\nAll routes are subject to change and you will be notified in advance or on the day. \nLeg 1\nRun | 5.2km \nRoute Overview: Start your adventure race at the Mountcharles Community Centre\, run downhill past the Chapel\, turning right\, watch out for a very steep descent past the Hall Demesne wall. Enjoy the views of Donegal Bay as you turn right onto the shore road and make your way from the little pier\, on past the big pier and get ready for the uphill past Salthill Gardens. Loop back right to Mountcharles.\nTerrain: Tarmac side road. \nLeg 2\nCycle | 23km\nRoute Overview: Pick up your bike at Gallagher’s Funeral Home Car Park\, go along the shore road again and up the multiple Salthill hills\, taking the 3rd right to take you past McMonagle’s Stone and down into Mountcharles. Leaving the village\, you’ll head under the bypass and then turn left up a good hill towards Drumkeelan\, reward yourself at the top with stunning views of the Bluestacks. You’ll turn right and head for Letterbarra. Turn right up the infamous Altadoo climb\, then right towards Eddrim Glebe. Marshals will guide you through several junctions to take you on a network of quiet rural side roads\, back to Mountcharles. Stay to the right of the red cones on the entrance to the Gallagher’s Funeral Home transition zone.\nTerrain: Tarmac side roads\, with some narrow sections with potholes & gravel. \nLeg 3 \nRun | 500m \nRoute Overview: Drop your bike at Gallagher’s Funeral Home transition zone. Sprint (uphill!) for the finish at the Community Centre! \n \nThe Full Monte\nAll routes are subject to change and you will be notified in advance or on the day. \nLeg 1\nRun | 5.2km | 85m Elevation\nRoute Overview: Start your adventure race at the Mountcharles Community Centre\, run downhill past the Chapel\, turning right\, watch out for a very steep descent past the Hall Demesne wall. Bear right past the chapel\, pedal towards the hills and drop your bike at the transition zone at Letterbara FC.\nTerrain: Tarmac side road. \nLeg 3\nRun/Hike | 6km | 415m Elevation\nRoute Overview: With the iconic Carnaween in front of you\, pass the football pitch\, along the road\, over the little Eany Beg River bridge\, turning right up to an old farmstead and red shed. Then hit the open mountain\, with a steep ascent in an anti-clockwise direction\, the route will be marked. Please follow the white flags and only cross the fences at designated points with styles. Clamber up the rocky summit\, take a moment to admire the views across to Fermanagh\, Leitrim\, Sligo and the Donegal coastline. Turn around and head (carefully!) down again.\nTerrain: some road\, track. The climb is on open mountain with no trail and several fences. Extreme caution is advised; underfoot is un-even\, boggy\, likely wet\, has streams & holes. Trail or hiking shoes with proper sole grips are highly recommended to minimise risk of falling. \nLeg 4\nCycle | 21km | 460m Elevation\nRoute Overview: Back at the transition zone\, collect your bike and get ready for more climbing! Turn left and bear right and up the ‘slog of a hill’\, Meenaguse. At the top of the climb\, you’ll be in the heart of the Bluestacks\, with the Greymare’s Tail Waterfall and Struell Gap to your left. Carefully descend along the gravel/pot holed road\, turn right and head back to Letterbarra. Turn up towards the infamous Altadoo climb\, then towards Edrim Glebe. Marshals will guide you through several junctions to take you on a network of quiet rural side roads\, back to Mountcharles. Stay to the right of the red cones on the entrance to the Gallagher’s Funeral Home transition zone.\nTerrain: tarmac road\, sections around Meenaguse have loose gravel\, potholes. Extreme caution is advised in these sections\, particularly on the descents. \nLeg 5\nRun | 5km\nRoute Overview: leave your bike at Gallagher’s Funeral Home transition zone and run down past the Hall Demesne. Carry on along the road\, to a right turn and find yourself on the beach. Turn left along the Warren\, going in a clockwise direction and following the white flags over dunes. Looping back onto the road\, to enjoy the final push uphill past those Hall Demesne Walls and for a sprint finish up to the Community Centre.\nTerrain: tarmac road\, beach with sand\, stones and sand dunes. Caution is advised; underfoot is un-even in places and may be slippery on stones.

The climb starts steeply and gets worse before an easy section just after half way leads to the final ramp. Treat this climb with respect as there’s not much recovery before you reach Transition 1 (T1) and it’s too early in the day to be digging deep. \nLEG 2 – TRAIL RUN \nA fairly fast route on forest fire road with a short section of tarmac road at halfway. If it’s clear there can be great views early on towards the Sligo hills. Once through the farm yard after the road section prepare yourself for a sapping uphill drag of about 1km before retracing part of your outward route back to the bike. \nLEG 3 – CYCLING \nThe first section to Cashel Cross is great – good surface\, sweeping bends and almost all downhill. The next bit to Garrison isn’t too bad either – an initial climb followed by a quick section on the back road into the village. The route takes in the beautiful park alongside Lough Melvin before a short off road section across a footbridge and up a steep un-surfaced track. You’ll have to run this bit but it’s all over in a minute or two. The rest of the leg to T2 is on good road but it’s tough. Endless short steep hills or long drags for most of the way sap the strength of even the best cyclist. The section from the high point at Meenacloybane to the entrance to the forest drive gives you some respite before the final leg buster to T2. \nLEG4 – TRAIL RUNNING \nAlthough shorter than the first trail run this one seems harder. Again the first half is downhill on fire road except for about 800m of single track past the waterfall. It’s all uphill now back to the transition. It feels relentless at this stage in the race. \nLEG 5 – CYCLING \nThis is the shortest bike leg. If you’ve been changing shoes between running and cycling you might decide it’s not worth it for this section. The only problem is the really steep bit of road about half way in. Not easy to overcome in trail shoes on clipless pedals. If you can take the time to admire the view from T3 glance across Lough Erne towards Donegal. It’s spectacular but looks a long way down. \nLEG 6 – TRAIL RUNNING \nAlmost 300metres of descending in less than 1km. This will trash the legs unless you’re used to hill running. The steps can be tricky but you must keep to the path. \nLEG 7 – KAYAKING \nGrab your choice of open top kayak and head east parallel to the shoreline for 500metres before rounding the buoy and heading back past the transition area to the next buoy barely visible 1km away. You should be sheltered from the prevailing winds so you can enjoy the long views across Lough Erne to your right or contemplate what’s to come on the next leg to your left. Round buoy 2 and head back to transition. \nLEG 8 – TRAIL RUNNING \nAs a one off this next bit\, the climb back up to T3\, is hard enough but after what’s gone before it’s nothing short of horrendous. If you can run all the way and not cramp up you’ll be one of the very few. \nLEG 9 – CYCLING \nThe glory leg\, this is a fast and furious descent to the finish. Enjoy it. No holding back required. Let your inner Bradley Wiggins out. \nNB. DESCRIPTION:S2S EVENT INFO\nWestport Sea 2 Summit takes place on Saturday 8th November. The adventure race is a unique event based in the adventure capital of Ireland\, Westport. The race incorporates all the thrills that Westport has to offer; Croagh Patrick\, Clew Bay\, the Sheaffry Mountains and the new Greenway. \nWestport Sea2Summit is organised and run by the Westport Plaza & Castlecourt Hotel Resort under the guidance of Race Director\, Paul O ‘Brien of Boot Camp West. \nThere will be two separate races with three categories in both\, which will include a mix of road running\, cycling\, and a mountain hike. \nThe Sea2Summit Spirit will cater for the participant that wants a challenge but has not taken part in adventure racing before. Duration time for the fastest will be 2.5 – 3hrs. \nThe Sea2Summit Supreme is for the participant who wants an extra challenge. The hike up and down the front face of Croagh Patrick (Murrisk) will hurt the legs and the back breaking ramps at the Maum climb will definitely test your bike and quad muscles.\nDuration time for the elite athletes will be around 3.5hrs.\nIn these two races\, there are 3 categories to choose from: \n\nAdvanced\nIntermediate\nBeginner\n\nYou will be asked when registering which category you would like to be in. We ask people to enter themselves into a category so that they will be competing alongside competitors of the same standard. \n\nThe S2S Supreme Course\nThe event begins at the Westport Plaza & Castlecourt Hotel Resort. \nStage 1 Participants will run up Distillery Road on to the new Greenway and follow the Greenway to Westport Quay. (4km) \nStage 2 The 1st Transition Point is at Roman Island there you change on to your bike and follow the road out via the coast to Murrisk (8k) to Croagh Patrick car park. ( Transition 2) \nStage 3 Changing shoes again to climb Croagh Patrick (5k) which is widely known and we are using the most used side for the race. At the top we urge that you take care on the descent as the loose shale is dangerous and numerous accidents have occurred there in the past. \nStage 4 Returning to Croagh Patrick Car Park to pick up your bike and take on the rolling hills. Taking the main road to Louisburgh turning at Kilsallagh for Drummin where the steep climb of the Maum awaits you; recommended gearing on your bike is 39×27 its 25% in places\, through Drummin village and on to Liscarney where it’s all downhill back to Roman Island transition point. \nStage 5 The last section could be the hardest\, with a 4 km run to include an obstacle course and sea run\, returning to Westport Town via the Greenway\, finishing at the Fairgreen overlooking the Mall River. \nTHE S2S SPIRIT COURSE\nThe S2S Spirit Course is similar with the same first run and bike but the hike up Croagh Patrick only goes as far as the ridge (3k) and then descends to the car park leaving out the torches Cone.
