SUMMARY:Gaelforce - Mountain Run
DESCRIPTION:CONQUER THE WILDS OF CONNEMARA\nUNIQUE ACCESS TO UNMARKED MOUNTAINS WITH 3 DISTANCES \nSpecial access has been granted to this stunning route by local landowners making it an amazing opportunity for mountain running \n1. 22KM EXPERT MOUNTAIN RUN \n2. 12KM INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN RUN \nChallenging terrain throughout with steep ascents and descents. Before entering either of these two races we recommend you read our Entry Requirements. \n3. 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN/TRAIL RUN \nFor those who are new to mountain running and are looking for an introductory event. You will need a reasonable level of fitness. \nTHE COURSE\nTHE 22KM EXPERT MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nSTAGE 1:\nThe route starts from Killary Adventure Centre and heads across the bog until it joins the Western Way walking trail. This brings you onto a forestry road and on to your first ascent of the route. You will stay close to a marked fence as you ascend. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324 metres and you will keep the fence within 10m of you as you climb up the hill. Once you reach the top there is a slow\, gentle descent along the soft ground at the top. You will continue along to a left turn at the end of the valley – a distance of approximately 2 km from the top of the hill. \nSTAGE 3:\nThe route descends for the first part before climbing from approximately 800 feet up to 1800 feet.  This is a steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. Next you will continue along to spot height 556 metres.\nThis section of the run is quite boggy and visibility up here can change quite quickly.  Performing a U turn you will head out along the edge of the valley before going downhill into Leenane.  This is a good descent if you are happy on bog and slippy ground\, if not take your time! \nSTAGE 4:\nReaching the back of Leenane you will come out into a private road and then follow this down to the main road.  You will encounter a dangerous corner so be aware of traffic. This road section will be about 600m and before joining the rough Western Way track. Continue along this until you reach the arrow pointing you up your last hill. \nSTAGE 5:\nThe last hill will be marked again with bamboos holding ribbons which you must stay within 10m of as this is the safest route. You continue to the summit cairn.\nFor your descent is quite tricky underfoot so please be aware of conditions and your skill level in descending.  You are aiming for the Western Way again and the path from earlier returning you to Killary Adventure Centre and the finish line. 22km and 4500ft of ascent done and dusted. \n**Please make sure you are aware of the Mandatory Kit List which is extremely important for all distances of the Mountain Run. \nTHE 12KM INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nSTAGE 1:\nThe route starts from the back of Killary Adventure Centre and heads across the bog until it joins the Western Way walking trail. This brings you into forestry. You continue along a slightly overgrown road to the bottom of the mountain. Starting up the hill you will follow the fence which is marked with red ribbons. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324m and you will keep the fence within 10m of you. Once you reach the top there is a nice gentle descent across the soft ground at the top.\nYou will continue along to a left turn at the end of valley – approximately 2 km from the top of the hill. \nSTAGE 3:\nThe route descends for the first part before climbing from approximately 800 feet up to 1800 feet.  This is a steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. At the end of the climb you will continue to follow fencing out and around the top end of the horseshoe. Be aware that it is quite boggy here in sections but you need to maintain sight of the fence. \nSTAGE 4:\nClimbing to the last spot height at 550 feet\, it is all downhill from there.  The descent is along the fence line and with the 22km race rejoining your route there will be people coming past. Take care on descent as it is grass and bog. You will rejoin the Western Way back to Killary Adventure Centre. \nTHE 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nThe course follows the same route as Stage 1 of the 12km Intermediate Mountain Run. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324m and you will keep the fence to your left and within 10m. Once you reach the top there is a nice gentle descent across the soft ground at the top. \nHere is where you leave the other runners behind as you head down hill.  This ground is usually quite soft with slippery conditions underfoot.  As you get closer to the bottom you will start to follow a river. \nYou are now on the homeward stretch having reached the forest road. You continue along to the river crossing\, where depending on the amount of water you might have to use the bridge. Once past here you take a bog road to meet the tarmaced road before running a further 500m on main road to finish in Killary Adventure Centre. \nPRICING & INFO\n\n\n\nENTRY IS ONLINE ONLY AND IS NOW OPEN\n22km Expert & 12km Intermediate Events: €40.00pp (places limited) \n12km Introductory Event: €30.00pp \nAll prices shown exclude €4.50 booking fee \nOn-the-day entry if places available: \n22km Expert & 12km Intermediate Events: €50.00pp \n12km Introductory Event: €40.00pp \nPLEASE NOTE\nOnline registration closes at 15:00 on Friday 3 March 2017\, or when all places sold out. \nYou must be an experienced mountain runner to enter the 22km Expert or 12km Intermediate Events – please read the entry requirements before you decide to enter the Gaelforce Mountain Run. \nYou must be over 18 years of age on the day of the race to enter. \nENTRY FEE INCLUDES\n\nEvent technical T-shirt\nA fully marked route\nFull safety cover\nOne-off access to this stunning route\nUse of electronic timing devises\nPost-event food from John West!\n\nPlease note t-shirts are ordered 4 weeks in advance of the race. SUMMARY:The Race - Donegal
DESCRIPTION:THE RACE: 250 KILOMETERS 24 HOURS.\nThe Race is a 250 km unsupported endurance event across the rugged landscape of North West Donegal. To finish competitors have to complete 15km of kayaking\, 166km of cycling\, 5km of mountain running and 64km of road and trail running. It is the ultimate 24 hour test of endurance. \nNorth West Donegal has been chosen for The Race 2017 as it provides the perfect blend of beauty and more importantly\, difficulty. The Race is held in early March to increase the chances of challenging weather conditions during the event. It is the toughest of courses at the toughest of times. In many cases it is how an athlete deals with the wind\, rain or snow that will determine if they have what it takes to finish. \nThere is no typical competitor. Competitors come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. You do not need to be an elite runner\, cyclist or kayaker. Those who compete in and complete The Race will be those who refuse to give up. \nThe focus of the The Race will be on the quality of experience rather than quantity of participants. The field will be limited to 150 participants to protect the local environment which includes Glenveagh National Park. The intention is not to exclude but rather to create an experience that will be one of the toughest but also most memorable of a competitor’s life. \nThe Race is a not for profit event will all proceeds going towards the work of Self Help Africa. It is organised by Sand2Snow Adventures and Gartan Outdoor Education Center. \nThe Race is more than just an endurance event. It get’s inside your skin and becomes a part of who you are. It forces you to apply yourself in preparation for the race in ways that you never thought possible. And during the race you overcome obstacles that would have you turning for home on any other day. You come out of it a more confident and resilient person to whom anything is possible. And of course you become part of a community of fellow competitors. People who are always happy to hear from you if you have any crazy ideas!! – Paul Tierney\, Competitor 2016 \nAwesome event\, put on by an amazing team\, in an incredibly beautiful county. Definitely one for the bucket list. – Rose Leith\, Competitor 2015 \nStage 1: Run (22km) Gartan Adventure Center to Ramelton\nThe Race begins in the dark with competitors completing a half marathon as the sun begins to rise. This stage is all on roads with a gradual decline in elevation. \nStage 2: Kayak (15Km) Ramelton to Rathmullan\nCompetitors will reach the beginning of stage 2 as the sun begins to rise. This kayaking stage takes place on Lough Swilly. Competitors use single sit on top kayaks to paddle the 15km distance between Ramelton to Rathmullan. \nStage 3: Cycle (96km) Rathmullen to Muckish Mountain\nConstant hills and a prevailing south westerly wind make it hard to find a rhythm during a stage that has been voted the toughest stage in the event by the majority of race finishers. \nStage 4: Run (5km) Run/Walk/Scramble up and down Muckish Mountain\nA 2.5km climb takes competitors to the top of Muckish Mountain. Conditions under foot are marshy from the outset but the ground hardens as you climb. \nStage 5: Cycle (68km) Muckish Mountain to Glenveigh National Park\nOn paper the easier of our two cycles takes competitors around the wind swept and ruggedly beautiful Bloody Foreland. Many competitors will be attempting this cycle in the dark which along with the wind can turn it into one of the toughest stages depending on when you hit it. \nStage 6: Run (42km) Towards Gartan Adventure Centre along the paths and trails of Glenveagh National Park\nThe final stage is for many the toughest with the majority of competitors completing all of the 42km’s in darkness. \nRace Schedule\n10 March – 12 March 2017\nGartan Adventure Centre\, located on the banks of Gartan Lake\, will play host to The Race 2017. \nN.B.
