The most suitable bike would be a road bike with Gator Skin tyres and least suitable would be a Mountain Bike. \nDo I need any specialist equipment?\nApart from the basics (bike\, running shoes\, mandatory kit) you do not need any specialist equipment. We will provide you with a kayak\, paddle and buoyancy aid. \nDo I have to have any specialist map reading or mountain skill to compete in the race?\nNo. You will be provided with a map. The route is marked out with signs and race Marshalls will also be on hand along the route. \nWhat is your refund policy?\nWhen entering the event it is part of the terms and conditions that it is a non-refundable payment policy. \nIs there any water available along the route?\nThe exact locations of water stops will be highlighted on the map given to you at registration and will be refill only. You will be required to bring water with you for the duration of the race. \nWho provides my Kayak?\nThe event organisers will provide all kayaks\, paddles and buoyancy aid. Competitors will not be allowed to bring their own kayaks due to the remote location of the kayak stage. \nDo I need my own kayak\, buoyancy aid or paddle?\nNo. The event organisers will provide all kayaks\, paddles and buoyancy aid. The only time out zone where competitors can be timed out is while waiting for a kayak. The maximum amount of time allowed in the time out zone is 15 minutes. DESCRIPTION:The routes are a mass of stunning scenery\, dotted with historical landmarks\, beautiful lakes and enduring climbs. While Extreme North take no credit for the fantastic natural routes\, other than identifying them\, the perfect balance of adventure\, endurance\, hospitality and care for runners is part and parcel of what makes an Extreme North event a memorable one. \nThis event is suited to all levels of fitness enthusiast / elite adventurer. The new Mini Adventure will hopefully entice the keep fit enthusiasts to the wonderful outdoors while the 62k Extreme course is what it says and will test any elite athlete at their own pace. \nAll races start at the Sliabh Sneacht Centre. \n\n62K Ultra race\n12.5K Run – Starting at the Sliabh Sneacht Centre a flat start soon turns right onto a 3.0k steep climb\, starting on road and eventually leading onto hill track. After passing the Wind Mills the hill road goes into a long decline before ending back on main roads and a rolling terrain leads runners to the Lake Kayak stage. \n1.5k Kayak – Kayaking is on Lough Fad lake\, surrounded by steep mountainous terrain\, so enjoy and relax a little for some of the tasks ahead. \n22.5k Cycle – The first cycle of the day starts with a 6k on road then 6k off road section which incorporates a 1k steep climb. Fantastic panoramic scenery on both sides of Lough Swilly as you wind your way around Wind Mills before embarking on rural windy\, rolling roads for the final half of the cycle terminating with a steep off road climb to base of Sliabh Sneacht. \n7.0K Mountain Trek – Starting with a .75k track\, then onto a similar distance of relatively flat but boggy section before embarking on the real 2k climb of Sliabh Sneacht. Hopefully a clear day will reveal the real beauty of the peninsula for as far as the eye can see. \n18.4K Cycle 2 – Continuing on Mountain track and after a short 1k you may have to assist / carry you bike across a 100m section then another 2k of off road before eventually ending up on small windy rural roads as you make your way back to the Finish line at Sliabh Sneacht Centre at Drumfries. \n0.1K Run -Rack your bike and a short sprint around the Centre to the very welcome Finish Gantry where you’ll get presented with your Medal and Race time and then a well deserved warm meal as you reminisce on your achievement with friends and colleagues. \n41K Sprint Race\n6.50k Run – All on road this starts with an easy flat then continues on rolling roads as you make your way to Lough Fad and the Kayak section. \n1.5k Kayak – Kayaking is on Lough Fad lake\, surrounded by steep mountainous terrain\, so enjoy and relax a little for some of the tasks ahead. \n15.0k Cycle – The first cycle of the day starts with a 6k on road then 5k off road section which incorporates a 1k steep climb. As you turn around to descend again take in the real beauty of the peninsula for as far as the eye can see. \n13.15K Cycle 2 – Continuing on Mountain track and after a short 1k you may have to assist / carry you bike across a 100m section then another 2k of off road before eventually ending up on small windy rural roads as you make your way back to the Finish line at Sliabh Sneacht Centre at Drumfries. \n0.1K Run -Rack your bike and a short sprint around the Centre to the very welcome Finish Gantry where you’ll get presented with your Medal and Race time and then a well deserved warm meal as you reminisce on your achievement with friends and colleagues. \n23K Mini Adventure\n3.00K Run – Short but not easy \, mainly rising roads with the most notable climb as runners turn towards Sliabh Sneacht on the off road section. This run will continue into the mountain trek\, but a forced slower pace will be a welcome addition. \n4.00K Mountain trek – At end of run on hill track runners now start on the first 1k of flat boggy hill trek\, then a further 1k climb half way up the mountain. Take note of the beautiful scenery as you turn around to descend the mountain and back to the Bike Transition. \n5.00K Cycle 1 – Continuing on Mountain track and after a short 1k you may have to assist / carry you bike across a 100m section then another 2k of off road before eventually ending up on rural roads as you make your way to the kayak section. \n1.0k Kayak – Kayaking is on Lough Fad lake\, the kayaks are twin\, flat bottom kayaks which means that you don’t really need much /any previous kayaking experience as there is little chance of capsizing. So relax and take in your surrounded of the steep mountainous terrain\, as you complete the short course around the centre Island. \n9.9K Cycle2 – Back on the bike and navigate along small windy rural roads as you make your way back to the Finish line at Sliabh Sneacht Centre at Drumfries. \n0.1K Run -Rack your bike and a short sprint around the Centre to the very welcome Finish Gantry where you’ll get presented with your Medal and Race time and then a well deserved warm meal as you reminisce on your achievement with friends and colleagues. \nFinish Arena \nThe finishers arena in the new Sliabh Sneacht centre will greet you with a welcome worthy of the challenge and you can rest shower and recover as you savour the hot food and goodies while reflecting on an amazing achievement on an equally amazing course. They are 24 speed with Shimano Acera gearing\, aluminium frame and rigid forks. The tyres are fairly wide for the road ut ideal for the trail. All bikes are well maintained by our on-site mechanic so you can be sure that a great bike awaits you for the day of the event. With the climb of Knockmore\, this race is no picnic and will present a serious challenge even to seasoned adventurers. For those who might not be back in shape after the winter – or for beginners – the Spirit Race omits the climb of Knockmore\, and has a shorter cycle\, making it very doable although still reasonably challenging. It is also very affordable at just €45 for the full race and €35 for the shorter race. \nTHE COURSE  (Start time: 1.00pm)\n\nBreakdown of Full Race distances:\n\nRun – 5 km\nCycle – 13.6 km\nRun / Climb – 5 km\nDash to finish – 0.5 km (incl. beach obstacle course)\nTotal – 24.10 km\n\nBreakdown of Spirit Race distances:\n\nRun – 5 km\nCycle – 9.5 km\nDash to finish – 0.5 km (incl. beach obstacle course)\nTotal – 15 km\n\nStage 1 – Capnagower / Fawnglass loop run (5 km)\nStart at Go Explore Hostel & run along tarmac road with a small piece of green road\, wet in areas\, and back to hostel. \nStage 2 – The Gravel Pit cycle (5.5 km)                                  \nStart at Go Explore Hostel & cycle along tarmac road to the gravel pit situated at the foot of Knockmore. \nStage 3 – The Knockmore Mountain climb (5 km)\nStart at Gravel Pit & run along green road for 1km before beginning the mountain climb from circa 100m to 460m and back down the same way to the Gravel Pit. \nStage 4 – The Church Gate cycle (8.1 km)              \nStart at Gravel Pit & cycle along tarmac roads through the Church Gate and along the westerly side of the island to complete the Clare Island circuit & back to the harbour. \nStage 5 – Walk the Plank / Beach Challenge / Dash to the Finish (0.5 km)   \nRun from the bike drop off to the old pier where you walk the plank off the pier into the water and swim / wade back to the beach (swim / wade less than 15m). Navigate through the beach activities before the final 200m dash to the hostel and the finish. (Note – All participants can bypass “Walk the Plank” however this will result in a 2 minute penalty). \nMANDATORY KIT\n\nGuide Map (provided by organisers at registration)\nEnergy food and drink\nCycle gear: bike\, bike tool kit\, puncture repair kit and cycle helmet*\nWindproof / waterproof jacket\nSturdy walking / running shoes with good grip essential\n\n* This is the mandatory cycling kit and can be left with your bike in the transition. ALL other mandatory kit MUST be carried with you during the race. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\n\nTiming carried out by Core Timing\nBIKE – All of the bike section of the race is on tarmac roads however some of the roads are in disrepair with some areas having grass growing on the road. There are some very steep ascents and descents on route with some sharp turns immediately at the foot of some steep descents. It is an absolute necessity to have excellent brakes and tyres with excellent grip. Off road bike is reccomended.\nThe run / climb sections of the race bring you through some of the most beautiful countryside in the country with spectacular views spanning the entire Clew Bay area from the Killary Fjord\, Mweelrea Mountain\, Croagh Patrick\, Westport\, Mulranny and Achill Island.\nAny person found littering will be immediately disqualified.\nCaution: Always obey the rules of the road. Watch the road for markings of areas of special risk (please note that these markings do not identify all areas of risk). Wear suitable shoes for downhill\, wet\, off road conditions.\nCompetitors must check in with the marshal at each transition point identified on the map.\nThis event will become part of a calendar of race events throughout the year on Clare Island.
