DESCRIPTION:***SOLD OUT***\n\nWHAT IS QUEST GLENDALOUGH?\n\nThis epic adventure involves racers running and cycling through the Wicklow Mountains National Park and Glendalough Valley as well as kayaking across the spectacular Upper Lake and finishing the race in the shadows of the monastic round tower which epitomizes the Glendalough area. \nThree challenging routes: 59k Expert\, 43km Sport and 21k Challenge. \n21KM CHALLENGE ROUTE INFORMATION \nThe race consists of the following 4 stages: \n \nStage 1: Cycle – 12km\nDescription: Starting after a mass start from the Laragh GAA grounds you will cycle out towards Clarabeg and take a right at Turners crossroads. \nYou descend right into the valley and after passing the picturesque Claravale Church and bridge you ascend the testing 300m long climb to join the main R755 to take you back to Laragh GAA transition area \nTerrain: Sealed road\, varying in quality from good to fair with possibility of some gravel and potholes. \nStage 2: Trail Run – 4km\nDescription: Competitors will rack their bikes at the Laragh GAA transition. From here you head out the “Green Road” walking track towards the Upper Lake pass close to the world famous Glendalough round tower and monastic heritage site. \nTerrain: Walking trail\, stone path\, forest track generally of good quality but possibility of some slippy sections \nPrecautions: Trail runners are recommended but not essential. \n \nStage 3: Kayak – 1km\nDescription: Kayak a triangular route around the spectacular clear waters of Upper Lake on sit on top kayaks. \nTerrain: Competitors cannot bring their own kayaks they must use provided sit on top kayaks & paddles. Buoyancy aids must be worn at all times. \n \nStage 4: Trail Run – 4km\nDescription: The final race stage is a short 4km run to the finish line at Laragh GAA pitch. \nAll competitors will be given their customized medal on crossing the finish line. \n  \n43KM SPORT ROUTE INFORMATION \nThe race consists of the following 6 stages: \n \nStage 1: Cycle – 6km Description: Starting after a rolling start from the Laragh GAA pitch you will cycle up along Military road. From here you will drop you bike at the transition area in the Shay Elliot recreation area. \nTerrain: Sealed road\, varying in quality from good to fair with possibility of some gravel and potholes. \nPrecautions: The roads are not closed and are open to traffic. \n \nStage 2: Trail Run – 6km \nDescription: Competitors will drop their bikes at the Shay Elliot recreational area car park. \nBy foot you then follow a marked forest trail and then open mountain trail towards the summit of Braigue Mountain (502m) before returning to summit of Cullentra (467m) and back via mountain and forest tracks to the transition area. \nCompetitors can embrace the views of the stunning Glenmalure valley and the surrounding mountains. \nTerrain: Walking trail\, stone path\, forest track\, mountain track of good to rough quality with slippy muck and rock sections. \nPrecautions: Trail runners are highly recommended. \n \nStage 3: Cycle – 20km \nDescription: Back on your bike head you descend into the valley and turn left at the Glenmalure Lodge (Film location for “The Stag” movie) pub heading towards Greenan where you turn left and go up the final bike climb of the day past Glenmalure golf club on a section of recently laid “cream cheese” surfaced road. \nYou then descend to join the R755 and return to the transition area at Laragh GAA pitch. \nTerrain: Sealed road\, varying in quality from very good to fair with possibility of some gravel and potholes \n\nPrecautions: The roads are not closed and are open to traffic. \nStage 4: Trail Run – 6km \nDescription: Competitors will rack their bikes at the Laragh GAA transition area. From here you head out a forest track running along the side of the valley with fabulous views down onto the valley and the world famous Glendalough round tower and monastic heritage site and catch a glimpse of your destination for the kayak section at the upper lake. \nTerrain: Walking trail\, stone path\, forest track\, mountain track – Generally of good quality with possibility of some slippy sections. \nPrecautions: Trail runners are recommended. \n \nStage 5: Kayak – 1km \nDescription: Kayak a triangular route around the spectacular clear waters of Upper Lake on sit on top kayaks. \nTerrain: Competitors cannot bring their own kayaks they must use provided sit on top kayaks & paddles. You then descent into Aughavanagh and turn left to bring you back up the Brown mountain climb to the 2nd Expert transition at  \n\nNote: You will encounter steep hills and sharp bends on this section.Barnaslew parking area. \nPrecautions: The roads are not closed and are open to traffic. \nTerrain: Sealed road\, varying in quality from good to fair with possibility of some gravel and potholes \n \nStage 4: Run – 5km\nDescription: Starting at Barnaslew transition area you follow forest trail to back near the Ballinagappoge bridge from where you will follow a forest trail and then onto the open mountain to the summit Croaghanmoira mountain (High point of the course at 667m). \nFrom the summit you descend back to transition by the edge of the forest on a steep\, rough\, rocky track. \nTerrain: Walking trail\, stone path\, forest track\, mountain track with slippy muck and rock sections. \nPrecautions: Trail runners are highly recommended. \n \nStage 5: Cycle – 18km\nDescription: Back on your bike head you descend towards Greenan and the final bike climb of the day past Glenmalure golf club on a section of recently laid “cream cheese” surfaced road. \nYou then descend to join the R755 and return to the transition area at Laragh GAA pitch. \nTerrain: Sealed road\, varying in quality from very good to fair with possibility of some gravel and potholes \nPrecautions: The roads are not closed and are open to traffic. \n \nStage 6: Trail Run – 6km\nDescription: Competitors will rack their bikes at the Laragh GAA transition area. Your bike does not need to be racked the night before for Quest Glendalough. \nWhat type bike should I use?\nThe choice of bike is an individual choice. The most suitable bike would be a road bike with Gator Skin tyres and least suitable would be a Mountain Bike. \nDo I need any specialist equipment?\nApart from the basics (bike\, running shoes\, mandatory kit) you do not need any specialist equipment. We will provide you with a kayak\, paddle and buoyancy aid. \nDo I have to have any specialist map reading or mountain skill to compete in the race?\nNo. You will be provided with a map. The route is marked out with signs and race Marshalls will also be on hand along the route. \nWhat is your refund policy?\nWhen entering the event it is part of the terms and conditions that it is a non-refundable payment policy. \nIs there any water available along the route?\nThe exact locations of water stops will be highlighted on the map given to you at registration and will be refill only. You will be required to bring water with you for the duration of the race. \nWho provides my Kayak?\nThe event organisers will provide all kayaks\, paddles and buoyancy aid. SUMMARY:Clare Island Adventure Race 2019
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 7th year\, the Clare Island Adventure Race 2019 is set to take place on Saturday\, 27th April. \nThe race starts and after party begins at Go Explore Hostel & Sailor’s Bar which offers single beds in en-suite dorms or rooms of 6 or 8 which can be booked by groups. The bed night rate is €27 per person including a light breakfast. Visit www.goexplorehostel.ie for more info or call 098 26307/087 4108706 to make a reservation. \nThe Race\nThis event will appeal to both experienced and novice adventure racers. There are two options. First for the experienced racer. The full course will be the perfect warm-up race for a busy season ahead. With the climb of Knockmore\, this race is no picnic and will present a serious challenge even to seasoned adventurers. For those who might not be back in shape after the winter – or for beginners – the Spirit Race omits the climb of Knockmore\, and has a shorter cycle\, making it very doable although still reasonably challenging. \nTHE COURSE  (Start time: 1.00pm)\n \nBreakdown of Full Race distances: \n\nRun – 5 km\nCycle – 13.6 km\nRun / Climb – 5 km\nDash to finish – 0.5 km (incl. beach obstacle course)\nTotal – 24.10 km\n\nBreakdown of Spirit Race distances: \n\nRun – 5 km\nCycle – 9.5 km\nDash to finish – 0.5 km (incl. beach obstacle course)\nTotal – 15 km\n\nStage 1 – Capnagower / Fawnglass loop run (5 km)\nStart at Go Explore Hostel & run along tarmac road with a small piece of green road\, wet in areas\, and back to hostel. \nStage 2 – The Gravel Pit cycle (5.5 km)                                  \nStart at Go Explore Hostel & cycle along tarmac / rough road to the gravel pit situated at the foot of Knockmore. \nStage 3 – The Knockmore Mountain climb (5 km)\nStart at Gravel Pit & run along green road for 1km before beginning the mountain climb from circa 100m to 460m and back down the same way to the Gravel Pit. \nStage 4 – The Church Gate cycle (8.1 km)              \nStart at Gravel Pit & cycle along tarmac roads through the Church Gate and along the westerly side of the island to complete the Clare Island circuit & back to the harbour. \nStage 5 – Beach Challenge / Dash to the Finish (0.5 km)   \nRun from the bike drop off at the pier and navigate through the beach activities before the final 200m dash to the hostel and the finish. \n  \nMANDATORY KIT\n\nGuide Map (provided by organisers at registration)\nEnergy food and drink\nCycle gear: bike (recommend mountain bike)\, bike tool kit\, puncture repair kit and cycle helmet*\nWindproof / waterproof jacket\nSturdy walking / running shoes with good grip essential\n\n* This is the mandatory cycling kit and can be left with your bike in the transition. ALL other mandatory kit MUST be carried with you during the race. \n  \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION\n\nTiming carried out by Core Timing\nBIKE – Most of the bike section of the race is on tarmac roads however some of the roads are in disrepair with some areas having grass growing on the road. There are some very steep ascents and descents on route with some sharp turns immediately at the foot of some steep descents. It is an absolute necessity to have excellent brakes and tyres with excellent grip. Off road bike is reccomended for this course.\nThe run / climb sections of the race bring you through some of the most beautiful countryside in the country with spectacular views spanning the entire Clew Bay area from the Killary Fjord\, Mweelrea Mountain\, Croagh Patrick\, Westport\, Mulranny and Achill Island.\nAny person found littering will be immediately disqualified.\nCaution: Always obey the rules of the road. Watch the road for markings of areas of special risk (please note that these markings do not identify all areas of risk). Wear suitable shoes for downhill\, wet\, off road conditions.\nCompetitors must check in with the marshal at each transition point identified on the map.\nThis event will become part of a calendar of race events throughout the year on Clare Island.
