We traveled south to Skibbereen for the second last event in the 2019 Continental National Adventure Race Series and after a sunny days racing the final tables are starting to take shape?…we are in for a serious day of adventure racing in 9th Nov in Westport at the final race Sea 2 Summit!

In the mens sport series the latest in a string of fine performances and a 3rd win in a row has secured the title for Philip Smith with 1 race to spare. The standard in the sport series, men and womens, this year has been phenomenal with potentially 5-6 people in every race capable of winning so it’s a testament to Philip’s consistency and ability to have won 3 events in a row. Niall Smith has cemented 2nd place and Bernard Smyth is rewarded for a fine season with 3rd place.

In the women’s sport series the top 3 have been decided but the order has yet to be finally determined. Lisa Clerkin remains in the top spot as we head in to the final round in Westport, but a mighty win in Skibbereen for Niamh Cleary moves her to 2nd place overall. Although level on points, under tie break rules Lisa remains in 1st place (R9a – Of the racers tied for 1st place – whoever has the most race ‘wins’ is deemed to be ahead). Niamh Garvey completes the top 3 with another great performance and is a member of the ‘hall of fame’ of athletes who have completed all the races in the series to date. Mathematically any of these 3 can finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd but we will need to wait until after the last race is completed to confirm final placing.

The mens expert series was decided at Quest Killarney with 5 straight wins clinching the series for Shane Scully but the chase for second and third is still in the melting pot. Barry Cronin has secured a top 3 spot and currently sits in second place. Sebastien Giraud is currently third tied on points with Mark Pinfield but ahead on tiebreak. With only 4 races complete Garry Scully could join Shane and Barry in the top 3 should he pick up a few points in Westport.

In the women’s expert series Aine Mahony has secured her spot in third place. With 2 wins in a row at Quest Killarney and SCAR Ellen Vitting is now the overall leader with Laura O’Driscoll in second place. They are tied on points but Ellen has the upper hand in the head to head points so is deemed to be ahead. We wait to see how Sea2Summit plays out, really couldn’t call it at this stage
