WHAT IS QUEST KILLARNEY?
Quest Killarney is a one day multi adventure sport race. This race gives competitors the chance to run, hike, cycle and kayak some of the most dramatic, breathtaking and remote scenery in the world.
There are 5 challenging routes:
Route Breakdown
Stage 1: Cycle – 14km
Description: Starting at the Gleneagle Hotel you will cycle through Killarney town to Kate Kearney’s Cottage.
Terrain: Sealed road
Features: Participants will experience a new element of traversing Killarney town with a scenic, engaging ride through Fossa and up into the Gap of Dunloe.
Stage 2: Mountain Run – 6.5km
Description: Starting at the base of the McGillycuddy Reeks this stage will take you through a tough steep bog mountain trail up and over Strickeen mountain.
Terrain: Hill trail & heathen bog.
Features: Stunning views of Carrantuohill, the Gap of Dunloe, the Lakes of Killarney and Purple mountain.
Stage 3: Road Bike – 36.5K
Description: Pick your bike up at Kate Kearney’s Cottage and start this amazing cycle with breathtaking views around every corner. On this stage you will encounter steep fast downhill cycling with sharp corners as you negotiate you way through this challenging section.
Terrain: Sealed road, varying in quality from good to gravel and potholes.
Features: The Gap of Dunloe, the Black Valley, Molls gap, ladies view, Lakes of Killarney and the eagles nest to name a few.
Stage 4: Run – 0.8km
Description: You will run less than a km at transition to Dundag and the kayak stage.
Stage 5: Kayak – 1km
Description: Kayak a circular route around the spectacular clear waters of Muckross Lake on double sit on top kayaks.
Restrictions: Competitors cannot bring their own Kayaks they must use provided double sit on top Kayaks & paddles. Buoyancy aid must be worn at all times.
Stage 6: Mangerton Mountain – 18.8km
Description: Starting by going under a 250 year old tunnel under the road, competitors will ascend to Torc Waterfall and follow forest tracks to the base of Mangerton. From here a mountain track leads to the Devil’s Punchbowl, 50 metres from the summit of Mangerton Mountain.
Terrain: Walking trail, stone steps, forest track, mountain track.
Features: From the summit you have panoramic views across the entire Killarney National Park, the Lakes of Killarney and as far as Kenmare Bay.
Precautions: The ascent up the final 50m to the summit of Mangerton is a steep rock incline and competitors must follow the marked route.
Cut off point: Competitors who do not reach the base of Mangerton Mountain by 2pm will not be allowed to continue up to the summit.
Stage 7: Road Cycle – 5.5km
Description: The final short cycle stage brings you to the finish line at the Gleneagle Hotel where all competitors will be given their customised medals and t-shirts.
Terrain: Sealed road, varying in quality from good to gravel.
Features: Muckross House and Gardens, Ireland’s largest Oak forest.
The race consists of the following 5 stages:

Description: Starting by going under a 250 year old tunnel under the road, competitors will ascend to Torc Waterfall and the old Kenmare Road, taking a left off the Old Kenmare Road and following a forest trail to a viewing point at Barr na Currane. The 9km distance includes 1km run up and back to the Kayak stage.
Terrain: Walking trail, stone steps, forest track and mountain track.
Features: From the viewing point you have panoramic views across the entire Killarney National Park, the Lakes of Killarney.
Precautions: Trail runners are recommended.
Cut off point: Competitors who do not reach the base of the forest trail by 4pm will not be allowed to continue up to Barr na Currane.
Stage 6: Road Cycle – 5.5km
Description: The final short cycle stage brings you to the finish line at the Gleneagle Hotel where all competitors will be given their customised medals and t-shirts.
Terrain: Sealed road, varying in quality from good to gravel.

Description: Starting at the Gleneagle Hotel you will cycle through Killarney town past Kate Kearney’s Cottage and on into the Gap of Dunloe, this amazing cycle has breathtaking views around every corner. You’ll continue past Lord Brandon’s and back to Torc. On this stage you will encounter steep fast downhill cycling with sharp corners as you negotiate you way through this challenging section.
Terrain: 35km sealed road, varying in quality from good to gravel and potholes. 4km narrow gravel path.
Precautions: The cycle along the Kerry Way to Lord Brandon’s Cottage is a narrow gravel path. There is no opportunity for overtaking along this section. The roads are not closed and as open to public.
Features: The Gap of Dunloe, the Black Valley, Molls gap, ladies view and the lakes of Killarney.

The race consists of the following 4 stages:
Stage 1: Cycle – 11km
Description: Starting at the Gleneagle Hotel this stage will take you along a cycle route around Muckross House in Killarney National Park.
Terrain: Sealed & gravel road.
Features: Stunning views of the Lakes of Killarney as the Cycle route take you around the lakes.
Stage 2: Run – 0.8km
Description: You will run less than a km at transition to Dundag and the kayak stage.
Stage 3: Kayak – 1km
Description: Kayak a circular route around the spectacular clear waters of Muckross Lake on double sit on top kayaks.

Stage 4: Forest Track Run – 8km
Description: Competitors will follow a trail parallel with the Ring of Kerry road. From here, ascend the famous ‘Cardiac Steps’ and follow the trail to the top of Torc Waterfall and back down the old Torc steps to the transition area.
Terrain: Walking trail, stone steps, forest track and mountain track.
Features: From various points along the trail you have panoramic views across the entire Killarney National Park, the Lakes of Killarney.
Precautions: Trail runners are recommended.
Cut-off point: Competitors who do not reach the base of the ‘Cardiac Steps’ by 4pm will not be allowed to continue up the trail.
Stage 5: Road Bike – 6km
Description: The final short cycle stage brings you to the finish line at the Gleneagle Hotel where all competitors will be given their customised medals and t-shirts.
Terrain: Sealed road, varying in quality from good to gravel.
Features: Muckross House and Gardens, Ireland’s largest Oak forest.
*Please note €5.50 online booking registration fee applies to each event. In addition a €2 National Park fee is charged for the upkeep and maintenance of Killarney National Park.
