3 weeks ago I took on DAR Dingle. I had a point to prove at this race as last year it ate me up and spat me out. I went into that race with zero training done and was just back from a 6 week chest infection. So the gauntlet was put down and I trained like a mad man this time around to make sure I came out on top. Mount Eagle was the killer for me. But I say “was”. This year, I won!
So why am i telling you this. Earlier today I was up on instagram and I came across this quote…
The Devil whispered in my ear, “You’re not strong enough to withstand the storm”. Today I whispered in the Devil’s ear. “I am the storm.”
Well these voices were in my head as I made my way up Mount Eagle in DAR last year and I listened, this year I refused to listen. I kept on moving, ruuning about 80% of it up. I made it to the top and back down. 12 months previous, i almost didn’t. Today I was the storm. Will it go down in history as record time, I sincerely doubt it. But for me, I won my race! There is a strong likelihood you will never see me on a podium as speed was never my forte. It has been jovially quoted that I am deceptively slow. 🙂
Forward 2 weeks and I was facing Gaelforce West and more to the point Croagh Patrick. Mentally I was stronger. I had pushed myself to a new level that I never knew I could possess thanks to guys at DAR Dingle. I was ready! I made it up the summit and back down without stopping.
And stumbling across this quote, I felt I must share it, as it is likely the Devil whispers in many an unsuspecting competitors ear. Every competitor will have their own goal or reason for taking part in an adventure race. For some, it is to get podium, for some it is to beat a PB, for some it is to beat a friend, for some it is to finish…the list can go on. Everyone races their own race!
